Sunrise stroll on Coopers Beach
It is only a few steps from your suite to Coopers Beach, a 2-kilometer crescent of flat, safe, sandy beach. Swim, sun, jog, fish, dive, kayak, photography, etc. We provide beach towels & beach chairs, and have boogie boards available upon request.

There is an all-tides small boat ramp at west end of beach. A launching ramp for larger boats is just over the hill in Mill Bay.

2-minute walk takes you to Coopers Beach Shopping Centre: 4 Square Market, ATM, pharmacy, butcher, hairdresser, wine shop, sports shop, hardware store. Also a pizza/takeaway shop, plus an excellent new restaurant for lunch and dinner.

GP Medical clinic within walking distance. Area Hospital in Kaitaia, 35 minutes by car. Local ambulance service also available.

It is a 2-minute drive to the historic whaling harbour and village of Mangonui, just over the hill: More restaurants, giftshops, kiwi pubs, stationers, real estate agents, police station and other services. Also the "world-famous in New Zealand" Mangonui Fish and Chip Shop built over the water. A Must!

Mangonui also offers fishing charters, including big game; choice of sightseeing charters and sailing excursions.

Perfect jumping-off place for exploring 90 Mile Beach and Cape Reinga, either by private car or commercial tour (the latter is highly recommended). Dune buggy hire available.

Whangaroa community golf course is a 15-minute drive; Kaitaia Golf Club at 90 Mile Beach, 40-minute drive, is one of the best in New Zealand. (Both inexpensive)

For the serious golfer, Kauri Cliffs and Carrington Club World Class courses are each about a 45-minute drive from Coopers Beach. (Not so inexpensive)

Local artists and craftspeople abound.

Okahu Estate, the northernmost winery in New Zealand offering award winning vintages, is about a 45-minute drive.

Carrington Club, on the Karikari Peninsula (25-minute drive) has the area's newest winery, across the road from the golf course. Lunch is available at the winery, and there is also a separate fine dining restaurant open for dinner. Both have magnificent views over sparkling white sand dunes and the bay beyond.

Private whaling museum at Butler Point, on the Mangonui Harbour (guided tour requires reservation and is well worth it).

15-minute drive to Swamp Palace, a unique local cinema in an historic town hall. First-run films in a memorable local atmosphere.

2-hour drive to Waipoua Forest, home of Tane Mahuta -- the largest living Kauri tree in New Zealand. The drive takes you along some spectacular Tasman Sea coast on the west side of New Zealand.

Ancient Kauri Kingdom. Unique giant kauri logs that grew 50,000 years ago have been retrieved from peat swamps and fashioned into furniture, collectables and souvenirs. 20 minute drive. A MUST see!

As a point of interest, Janet and George's private kitchen at Coopers Beachfront Suites is the first complete kitchen fashioned from this ancient wood. Guests are invited to stop in and see it.
